Essay Coach

Our Ideal Candidate:

The Essay Coach will provide individual and personalized instruction for students in 9th-12th grades. Essay Coaches teach the foundational writing skills needed for students to tell their story and prepare them to write compelling college essays. 

Reports to the Essay Writing Coordinator

Responsibilities :

>Essay Coach will participate in three programs throughout the year including the regular academic year writing program, a summer program, and an additional fall program working with seniors.   

>Essay Coach must commit to working with a minimum of ten students during each program (Please note that there is sometimes overlap in programs). 

>Complete monthly Zoom meetings with each student during the school year. More frequent meetings will be required during the summer program.

>Coaches teach their own lessons but use a specific rubric when scoring essays and utilize monthly themes or suggested writing prompts to connect students’ writing.

> Assign program aligned writing assignments and edit essays in between meetings.

> Score student’s writing using a rubric and provide feedback (at least twice during the academic year).

> Maintain notes and/or agendas of meetings.

> Communicate with students and their parents on a regular basis. Email parents if students miss a meeting. Respond to emails within 1-2 days.

>Escalate situations of issues with student attendance or other matters to the Upward Path Writing Coordinator.

> Update students’ dashboard: enter timesheets, upload rubrics and meeting agendas.

> Attend monthly writing coaches meetings and occasional collaboration meetings with the counseling team. 

> Hourly rate starts at $50 per hour; rate is determined by an applicant’s experience with teaching, specifically writing instruction and any college admissions experience.
