The Importance of AP Courses in College Admissions

How important are AP courses? Is it important for a student’s AP courses to be related to what they are going to study in college?
First, AP courses are college-level courses. They are usually only offered to students in the 11th and 12th grades. These types of courses are not appropriate for all students. Students can take these courses or advanced courses in an area of study that they may want to pursue in college. AP courses and the results on the AP exams communicate the student’s strengths and potential areas of interest to colleges.
Students should take these courses wisely and sparingly. Getting a “C” grade in an AP Biology course versus an “A” grade in a regular Biology course is a huge difference. Grades from these courses can have an impact on GPA in a negative way or in a positive way. AP scores are not as important as subject tests and SATs in college admissions.
When it comes to AP courses, students need to think about the way they take them. As previously stated, these courses are not for everyone. The student must be ready to take these courses and perform well in them; otherwise, he or she is doing themselves a disservice.
